Can I recite Quran from my phone without wudu?

This is a contemporary fiqh question with an important distinction:

Reciting from memory (without touching anything):

You may recite the Quran verbally from memory without wudu — even in a state of minor impurity. This is the position of the majority of scholars.

Evidence: The hadith: "The mu'min does not become impure." Ali (RA) used to recite Quran in all states except major impurity (janabah). (Bukhari)

Touching a physical Mushaf (printed Quran):

Touching the physical Mushaf requires wudu according to the majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali). Evidence: "None shall touch it except the purified." (Quran 56:79) — interpreted as referring to human purity.

Reciting/reading from a phone or tablet:

The preferred and stronger opinion is that wudu is NOT required to read Quran on a phone or tablet because:

1. You are touching a device, not the Mushaf itself

2. The phone contains thousands of other things besides the Quran app

3. The screen shows an image of text, not the sacred physical inscriptions

This is the position of: Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, Sheikh Ibn Baz (in fatwa), Al-Lajnah al-Da'imah (Saudi), and many contemporary scholars.

However: Out of reverence for the Quran, having wudu while reciting is always better (mustahabb), even from a phone.

State of major impurity (janabah): It is strongly discouraged (haram according to majority) to recite the Quran verbally in this state until ghusl is performed. This applies regardless of phone or mushaf.
