Is it permissible to say 'Eid Mubarak' and celebrate Eid?
Yes, it is absolutely permissible and encouraged to celebrate Eid and exchange congratulations.
The two Eids in Islam:
1. Eid al-Fitr — The feast breaking the Ramadan fast (1st Shawwal)
2. Eid al-Adha — The feast of sacrifice (10th Dhul Hijjah)
Evidence for celebrating Eid:
- The Prophet ﷺ established Eid prayers as a community celebration
- He encouraged wearing best clothes, eating, visiting family, and giving gifts
- Aisha (RA) reports he allowed singing and celebration on Eid
Saying "Eid Mubarak" / "Eid Said":
This is permissible and recommended. The Companions (RA) would greet each other on Eid. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani said: "The isnad for the Companions greeting on Eid is hasan."
Sunnah acts of Eid:
1. Perform ghusl before Eid prayer
2. Wear best and clean clothes
3. Eat dates (odd number) before Eid al-Fitr prayer; eat nothing before Eid al-Adha
4. Attend the Eid prayer (obligatory for men according to majority; Sunnah mu'akkadah for women)
5. Go via one route to prayer, return via another
6. Give Zakat al-Fitr before Eid al-Fitr prayer
7. Visit family and friends
8. Make takbeer (especially for Eid al-Adha)
