Noon Sakinah & Tanween Rules

Rules of Noon Sakinah (ن) and Tanween (ً ٍ ٌ)

When the letter Noon (ن) has a sukoon (no vowel) or when tanween occurs, four rules apply:

1. Izhaar (إظهار) — Clear Pronunciation

Letters: ء ه ع غ خ ح (throat letters)

Pronounce the noon clearly without ghunnah.

Example: مَنْ آمَنَ — clearly pronounced noon.

2. Idgham (إدغام) — Merging

Letters: ي ر م ل و ن

The noon merges into the following letter.

Example: مَن يَقُولُ — noon merges into ya.

3. Ikhfa (إخفاء) — Hiding

Letters: Remaining 15 letters

Partially conceal the noon with light nasalisation (ghunnah) for 2 counts.

4. Iqlab (إقلاب) — Changing

Letter: ب only

Change the noon into a meem sound with ghunnah.

Example: مِن بَعْدِ — noon becomes م sound.
